Construction Analysis

By amza , 2008-08-19 02:11:20 in Living

AMZA Management & Consulting is excited to work with COTO Construction who provided assistance with a client who received a residential rental property in her divorce settlement. This property has not been activily monitored by the owners for over the last 10 years. AMZA facilitated a complete inspection on the duplex to determine the costs involved in making this property habitable.
The work from COTO Construction was exceptional. We appreciate their quick response.   The property report that was generated after the inspection was quality work.  The client's divorce attorney is reviewing the report and the estimates, and in the meantime AMZA was able to find a property investor who is ready to make an offer.

Mentors, Role Models, Oh My!

By amza , 2007-09-28 20:19:57 in Living

If you wanted advise on how to have a successful marriage you don't go speak to someone who has been divorced four times.  Unless, you wish to ensure the failure of your marriage.  Knowing what not to do is as valuable as knowing what to do, but moves your focus away from what you should be doing.  The same is true in business.  If you emulate others who have risen quickly only to fail, you are doomed to the same mistakes.

Mentors and Role Models should not be limited to one person.  In fact, I would encourage you to seek several.  There is no ONE person who is perfect.  Everyone has flaws.  You may have one contact who is a fabulous public speaker, another who is great writer but hates to speak, or yet another who couldn't put two sentences together but can analyze without breaking a sweat.  What I am saying here is assess the skills before determining who you choose.

I have, over the years, developed my own "Executive Board of Directors" to provide guidance to me in the development of my life choices as well as my career phases.  I didn't go out and randomly select these people, but I had the courage to ask them for their advice and to let them know that I value both their time and their words.  Trust is a critical item in the development of these relationships.  You must be able to speak without the fear that someone might say something you don't want to hear.  They will, and it will hurt.

My Board consists of someone who has known me all my life, someone who has known me as a friend over 25 years, another friend who has known me 20 years, three people I once worked for and who's opinion means something, and one more person I worked with.  Having the opinions of persons in business, owners of business, people who know how I think, and someone who is nothing like me is a necessity for me.  I've had major decisions to make along the way and these people have been sought for their input, not to tell me what to do, but to point out areas I hadn't considered or to discuss holes in my reasoning, or to make suggestions based on their having more life experience than I.  When you make mistakes in your evaluation before a decision, the decision made is less on the mark than you would like it to be.

Decisions like these are often intertwined with emotions; emotions which ultimately will cloud your judgment, forcing you to take actions you may not want to or would not have otherwise.  This is why having someone else or several people who you can discuss your emotions with and move them out of the equation is best.
